First Day Hike at Newport, Other State Properties

Kick off your new year by getting out into nature on a First Day hike. Each year Wisconsinites join thousands across the nation hiking at state parks, forests or trails on New Year’s Day.

These hikes provide a way for individuals and families to welcome the coming year in the outdoors, exercising and connecting with nature.

Guided hikes will be available at numerous properties across the state, including Door County’s Newport State Park on Jan. 1, 9 am.

Participants in the Newport hike should meet at the Upland Trail, parking lot 1, to hike a two-mile loop. Take poles, walking sticks, snowshoes or Yak Tracks if conditions warrant. After the hike, stay for a bonfire and refreshments by the shelter building. Park in lot 3.

First Day hike participants may share their adventures using the hashtags #OutWiGo and #FirstDayHike on Instagram.

Additional opportunities to hike by moonlight or candlelight will be held throughout the winter. See a list of First Day hikes and candlelight events at dnr.wisconsin.gov/events.

A vehicle-admission sticker is required to visit state park system properties. Purchase one online, in person at state parks or Department of Natural Resources service centers, or by calling a local state park office during office hours.
