  • Cheers!: Wham, Bam, Thank You, Madame!

Grand Madame is one rooty, tooty, fruity barleywine. This 11.5 percenter was bottled in 2016 after being aged in a sherry barrel. It’s one of those big beers that would have been perfectly happy at the bottom of the magic fridge for years to come, but it was doomed to a much shorter life once […]

  • Cheers!: A Weekend of Violet Beauregarde Beers

I had a very rare weekend out of the county, starting the day off in Manitowoc for a conference, then hitting 3 Sheeps Brewery in Sheboygan to meet up with a pal who moved to that interesting shore community last December. It was a hot and humid day, so I especially enjoyed the Lemongrass Pils […]

  • Cheers!: All Hail the Hemperor!

I have to fess up to something. I subscribe to a number of recipe services that send stuff daily. Most of it I don’t pay attention to, but every so often a headline will catch my eye and I will have to look at the recipe, and if it sounds as good as the title, […]

  • Cheers!: Parlez Vous Whatager?

Whoa! Got a gusher here! But let me start at the beginning… Still suffering from a slight case of beer fatigue, I was happy to see a new brewery represented in what looked like a series of barrel-aged farmhouse ales in bottles that look like miniature wine bottles, from a Marquette, Mich., brewery called Barrel […]

  • Cheers!: Down on Brown; Up with Oktoberfest

It was one of those days where I couldn’t seem to settle on a beer. Do I choose one of the 177 different kinds of IPA on the shelves? Blah! Maybe one of the 30 different kinds of coffee-flavored stout? Been there. Done that. Then my eyes landed on something that almost put me off […]

  • Boys & Girls Club Hosts Wine, Beer and Cheese Event

The Boys & Girls Club of Door County hosts its third annual Festival of Wine, Beer & Cheese on Aug. 9, 5-9 pm. The event is held at Stone Harbor Resort and is an important fundraiser for the club. Wine, beer, cheese and hors d’oeuvres are available to taste, and items are up for bid […]

  • Cheers!: Purple Brain

So, what can I say? I found this in the beer aisle. I had a thing for grape soda as a kid. I was particularly enamored of Donald Duck Grape Soda, perhaps just as much for the laughing cartoon duck in the sailor suit on the label than the purple soda inside the can. And […]

  • Cheers!: The Predicament of Pumpkins and Overpumped Tires

Remember when Fat Tire from New Belgium Brewing started showing up in local bars a dozen years or so ago (it might have been even a little longer than that – I forget exactly when it arrived, but for good reason because they had been sending me samples long before it was available this side […]

  • Cheers!: Something Fishy About This Tropical Fruit Ale

It’s another gruesomely hot day and I’m thirsty for something completely different. And then I see it – a fish beer called OnoLicious. It must be made with the large and ugly tropical fish known in Hawaii as Ono and elsewhere as Wahoo. But then I read on the label that this is not a […]

  • Cheers!: Size Does Not Matter In the Case of The Small Dood

I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up a bottle of De Kleine Dood made by Central Waters Brewing Co. of Amherst, Wis. I bought it because the Central Waters heron was standing on a skull and crossbones. I didn’t know what that meant, and I could find nothing on […]

  • Kickoff Party for Washington Island Nanobrewery

A Kickstarter kick-off party for a planned nanobrewery on Washington Island will be held at 8 pm Saturday, July 7, at Nelsen’s Hall and Bitters Pub on the island. The nanobrewery with a one-barrel system will be called Brews on the Rock and is expected to open for the 2019 season. The idea is the […]

  • Cheers!: Rye Not?

Rumor has it that One Barrel Brewing of Madison is moving to my village of 200 folks, right next to the new distillery that opens next month. Well, it’s more than a rumor. Owner Peter Gentry expects to close on the building any day now. So, it’s time for me to get to know One […]

  • Cheers!: It’s Always Sunny in Monk’s Cafe

I’ve always been curious about a beer called Monk’s Cafe, a Flemish sour ale from Belgium. Every beer lover has heard of Monk’s Café in the Pennsylvania city where it’s always sunny – Philadelphia. I thought there must be a connection, but it was only recently that I finally picked up a four-pack. This beer […]

The Dip brings their unique melding of vintage rhythm and blues and modern pop to the Door County Brewing Co. Music Hall in Baileys Harbor on June 28, 7 pm. The Dip is the first of four ticketed Thursday night shows at the Music Hall this summer, which will include Nikki Lane on July 19, […]

  • Uncork Summer Festival Returns June 23

Door County’s only outdoor “foodie” festival celebrates its fifth running this year. Scheduled for June 23, Uncork Summer once again takes place on the grounds of Wickman House in Ellison Bay.  Mickie Rasch, Door County North’s community coordinator, said the event’s hours have been tweaked a bit this year to reflect the realities of the […]

  • Chemist Who Transformed American Brewing Made Pit-stop in Door County

The headline read “Would Hide Death In Rose.” “Robert Wahl was accused yesterday of having expressed a desire to kill his wife by the use of a poisonous perfume placed on a rose,” read the first line of the article in the Chicago Tribune dated Jan. 23, 1909. He had second thoughts, however, primarily about […]

  • Cheers!: What’s Red & White and Full of Must?

When I poured this beer into a tall glass, its inviting glow reminded me of a tequila sunrise. So it does have that going on – it’s a pretty beer. A golden base laced with orange and red – sunset colors. Seems nicely carbonated, with a big tawny head. I take a whiff and get […]
