  • Cheers!: Ahnapee Brewery’s Barrel-Aged Cherry Stout

I was not at all surprised to learn last October that the small and relatively young Ahnapee Brewery of Algoma, Wis., won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival for its Munich Helles – a lager. It’s a classy lager made in a country that has little respect for lagers due to […]

  • Cheers! Thank the Pope for Doppelbock

Talking beer with a guy the other day, he tells me he’s a fan of dark beers, but he quickly adds, as a bourbon drinker, he does not like bourbon barrel-aged beers. I do! Talking about them made me want one, so I picked up a pint bottle of Hinterland’s Bourbon Barrel Doppelbock, one of […]

  • Cheers!: Tap Takeover at Bier Zot

When I learned that my favorite beer bar – Bier Zot in Sister Bay – was having a tap takeover by Deschutes Brewery of Bend, Oregon, I had my mind set on darkness – things like Obsidian Stout, Abyss Imperial Stout and Black Butte Porter. Imagine my surprise, then, when I see four IPAs […]

  • Cheers!: Habanero Heats Up This IPA

You gotta love it when someone gives you a beer and says “You’re gonna hate it.” Such was the case when Sam Northrop, beer expert at my local beer emporium, recently passed me a bottle of Habanero Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing of San Diego. He said the Habanero peppers overpower the beer, which is […]

  • Cheers!: Hit With a Cashmere Hammer

Someone enthusiastically recommended I try Cashmere Hammer from the 3 Sheeps Brewing Co. of Sheboygan. This was from a homebrewer with the last name of Pilz. I take his recommendations seriously, and not just because of his beery last name. He makes good beer, too! I found a sixer of Cashmere Hammer Nitro Rye Stout […]
