FOPPI Announces Volunteer Work Days

The Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands (FOPPI) have recently announced their 2016 work day volunteer opportunities. Work days will be extended from one to two days. Transportation will be provided on the USFWS boat (from Washington Island). Due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances, work day itineraries may change prior to the work day – watch the website (plumandpilot.org) and Facebook page for updates.

The first work day of the 2016 season is May 14-15. Help get Plum Island ready for visitors. Experience the beauty of Plum Island and Death’s Door while patrolling the shoreline for litter and grooming the walking trails. Work on building and grounds maintenance projects such as: grouting cracks in the lifesaving station foundation and storage building; cutting and treating stumps; removing grass, weeds and soil in and around the concrete walkways and keeper’s building foundation; sealing and patching window and door sills. The FOPPI Women in Preservation will place the Aldo Leopold benches, spiff up the boathouse and take an inventory of equipment and supplies. They’ll also begin this season’s citizen science wildflower and wildlife count and survey the wetland area for a future project. Contact Mary Beth Volmer ([email protected]) to reserve a spot.

Other upcoming work days include: June 4-5 – Nature Naturally, contact Tim Sweet ([email protected]) or Paul Schumacher ([email protected]); June 11-12 – Lighthouse Festival Stop on Plum, Tim Sweet ([email protected]); June 25-26 – Plum Perfect, Mary Beth Volmer ([email protected]); July 9-10 – WIP Rustic Campout, Amy Lesnjak ([email protected]); Aug. 6-7 – Paddle around Plum, Mary Beth Volmer ([email protected]); Aug. 20-21 – Explore Plum Island, Scott Nelson ([email protected]); Sept. 10-11 – Batten Down the Hatches, Scott Nelson ([email protected]).
