For Fungi Fans

Charlotte Lukes will teach a one-week class titled “Wild Mushrooms of Door County” at Bjِrklunden in Baileys Harbor beginning Sept. 14.

The class is already half-full. Students will take field trips each day and do some lab work in the classroom using a bioscope and an oil-immersion microscope to look at spores. If good edible species are found, the group may have some tasting sessions in class.

The commuter fee for the course is $385; this fee includes five days of classes plus Sunday evening dinner and five lunches. For more about the class visit lawrence.edu/s/bjorklunden/bjorkseminars.

Charlotte will also lead mushroom hikes at several state parks this year. Remaining hikes include: Aug. 23 & Sept. 6 – Whitefish Dunes, 9 – 11:30 am; Aug. 30 – Newport State Park, 9 – 11:30 am; and Sept. 13 – Washington Island, place and time to be determined.
