In 2015, the Door County Humane Society (DCHS) launched its pilot Therapy Dog Training Program, and it was such a success there will be a fourth session of Therapy Dog classes this fall. This program consists of three classes to prepare owners and their canine friends for the Therapy Dog Certification Test. Ron Maloney of Peninsula Dog Training donates his time to provide training for the class, and Carol Beck of Therapy Dog International (TDI) administers the certification testing. Along with passing the test, dogs must receive a physical exam by a vet, be current on vaccinations and other medical criteria, and apply to TDI for official certification. Once certified, dogs and owners are ready to begin their therapy visits.
“We are very proud to host this program for the fourth time. It’s a great way for us to give back to the Door County community and to further our positive impact on the peninsula,” said Communications and Development Coordinator April Delfosse.
