Fresh, Sparkling Watercolors

“The Camp Store” by Karen Shanahan.

The Door County Art League (DCAL) Gallery in Fish Creek features the artwork of Barb Kenyon and Karen Shanahan as artists of the week, July 12 –18.

Both an oil painter and watercolorist, Kenyon finds joy in painting en plein air. As she explains, there’s an endless array of subject matter in the meadows, woods, waters and old barns of Door County. Her work was juried into the Miller Art Museum, Hardy Gallery, and recently accepted into the New Vision Gallery’s agriculture show in Marshfield.

Shanahan creates sparkling watercolors alive with light and color. She likes to communicate a sense of mystery to the viewer through the intrigue created by negative painting (preserving the lights of the paper by painting around them). Primarily self-taught, Shanahan has taken several workshops since she began painting seriously in 2003. In addition to DCAL, she is a signature member of the Southern Arizona Art Guild. She also exhibits her paintings in Tucson, Ariz.

The DCAL gallery, located in the rear courtyard of the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek, is open 11 am to 5 pm every day except Wednesday, and from 11 am to 3 pm on Sundays. For more information visit doorcountyartleague.org.
