For three weekends in a row, the Door County Visitor Bureau had to tell vacationers that the county was full – there were no more rooms in the inns.

“We usually have two or three weekends like that,” said Jack Moneypenny, president of the Door County Visitor Bureau. “It is unusual to have weekends stacked back to back like this.”

But that’s what happened this summer during the last two weekends in July and the first weekend in August. Over the weekend of Aug. 4 and 5, the visitor bureau had to send visitors south to Algoma for places to stay.

Numbers point to strong tourism in Door County so far in 2012. Room tax collections through the month of June are up by over 10 percent, according to a report by the Door County Tourism Zone Commission.
