Gardening with Wine

Jan Wos, owner of Mayflower Greenhouse in Green Bay, and Glenn Spevacek, green industry marketing consultant, will be presenting at Crossroads at Big Creek, Collins Learning Center on Tuesday, May 19 at 7 pm.

The event, sponsored by the Door County Master Gardeners Association, is entitled “Gardening with Wine – The intoxicating use of colored foliage plants to enhance gardens and containers.” The lecture focuses on the use of “wine” (a.k.a. purple) colored foliage plants but is actually a more broad-ranging treatise on how to design garden “works of art” through the use of color, texture and form.

The presentation will touch upon foliage plants and container gardening, which is especially useful in a location like Door County where soil conditions and lifestyles make traditional gardening difficult. Foliage plants provide excellent value; putting on an outstanding show through the entire season, eliminating some of the frustration with flowering plants that don’t always bloom as expected.

Mayflower Greenhouse has developed a statewide reputation for its quality, selection and creativity – primarily in the container gardening area. Both Jan and Glenn travel extensively, in the U.S. and Europe to keep abreast of the latest trends in gardening. They have appeared multiple times on Wisconsin Public Television’s “The Wisconsin Gardener” with Shelley Ryan. Each spring the duo travels throughout Wisconsin giving presentations on a variety of Garden topics.
