Gardner Applies for Disaster Funds to Repair Stevenson Pier Road

The Town of Gardner has applied to the state for disaster-relief funds after a Thanksgiving-weekend snowstorm undermined and washed away parts of Stevenson Pier Road.

Town Chair Mark Stevenson said the road runs close to the shoreline for almost 2,000 feet. It incurred substantial damage along that stretch that could cost $220,000 to repair and replace.

“We had washouts and road damage, and we’re looking at more potential for erosion,” Stevenson said. “We’re doing patching now, but come spring, we’re going to have to do a lot of reinforcing down there.”

The town will place large stones along the road to break up wave action, similar to riprap around a marina pier.
