Gary Jones Headlines Dickinson Poetry Series

Gary Jones, featured reader at the Oct. 12 at 7 pm gathering of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Dickinson Poetry Series, is a teacher and writer who with his wife summers in Sister Bay and winters in Platteville. For many years he taught English at Gibraltar High School, and after his retirement, writing at UW-Platteville. In addition to his work as a poet, he freelances fine arts features and reviews for the Pulse and Door County Living, and occasionally writes plays and short fiction. The Wisconsin Historical Society Press will be publishing Ridge Stories, his memoir of growing up on a small dairy farm in southwestern Wisconsin.

During Jones’ career as a poet, dozens of his pieces have seen publication, and/or received awards. His poetry chronicles his experiences and observations, much like clippings and photos pasted in a scrapbook, offering personal glimpses into a life. But while this prolific poet enjoys his work, he tries not to take his poetry too seriously.

When not writing, Jones gardens and mows lawn, runs and swims, enjoys his family, and hopes to finish painting his house in Door County before snow flies.

On the second Wednesday of every month the Dickinson Poetry Series features a renowned local or regional poet followed by an open mic and reception. The public is welcome and there is no charge. The UUF is located at 10341 Hwy. 42 in north Ephraim. For more information visit uufdc.org or call 920.854.7559.
