Gary Jones Honored at Wisconsin Writers’ Spring Conference

Gary Jones of Sister Bay was recently awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2012 Florence Lindemann Humor Contest for his essay “Picture This.” The award was presented at the Wisconsin Writers’ Spring Conference on May 5 in Siren, Wisconsin.

This year’s judge, Jeff Eaton of Rhinelander, said: “A traditional ‘lessons learned the hard way’ piece, this essay is a good example of the power of contrast between an ideal and a reality. Cleanly written, particular in its details, and accessible, ‘Picture This’ doesn’t break a lot of new ground, but it engages the reader with its familiarity and assured point of view.”

Thirty-nine writers competed in this year’s contest and about 79 Wisconsin writers attended the event that featured workshops on the craft of the short story, the art of poetry, creative nonfiction and writer’s roundtables.

Wisconsin Writers Association’s next conference will be held September 28 – 30 at the Mead Hotel in Wisconsin Rapids.
