Gathering Waters Director To Honor Lukes

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7 pm at Bjِrklunden, Mike Strigel, executive director of Gathering Waters: Wisconsin’s Alliance for Land Trusts, will honor Roy and Charlotte Lukes winners of this years’ prestigious Harold “Bud” Jordhal Lifetime Achievement Award. The award honors the Lukes for their extraordinary contributions to land conservation during the last 50 years. Their work, with children and adults at The Ridges, The Clearing, Bjorklunden and so many other places, has contributed greatly to the preservation of places that make Wisconsin special, as well as fostering a conservation ethic statewide.

Bjِrklunden is located on Boyton Lane, south of Baileys Harbor. The public is invited to attend.

After honoring the Lukes, Mike will discuss current issues being faced by Wisconsin’s land trusts, as well as the valuable role these organizations play in recognizing how climate change is affecting our treasured lands and helping their communities address those changes. Gathering Waters represents a community of 50 nonprofit organizations dedicated to protecting Wisconsin’s special places. The land trust community in Door County has a long, successful history. The Ridges Sanctuary is the state’s oldest, founded in 1937, and the Door County Land Trust is one of the states strongest and an active Gathering Waters member.

The greater land trust community in Wisconsin is relatively young, and has experienced significant growth in the past 20 years. This growth has not only had meaningful impact on the way these organization’s do business, but also on the depth of impact that land trusts are having on communities, economies, and ecosystems.

This program is sponsored by the Climate Change Coalition of Door County and is open to the public. The coalition is dedicated to fostering awareness of the impacts of climate change on Door County, Wisconsin and the world, and to working together on a non-partisan basis to meet our responsibility to future generations to address climate change.
