“Get Comfortable with Butterflies, Bees and Other Pollinators” at Ridges Program

Joan Calder

Joan Z. Calder, author of Airplanes in the Garden, will present “Get Comfortable with Butterflies, Bees and Other Pollinators” on July 29 at 10:30 am as part of The Ridges Sanctuary’s No Family Left Inside program series. The program will be held at The Ridges Marshall Cabin, 8288 Hwy Q in Baileys Harbor. No advance registration is required. The fee is $10/family.

Using easily understood science and a charming narrative, Calder will cover the roles and habits of bees, butterflies and other pollinators, the life cycles of bees and butterflies and the requirements of pollinators in the garden. She will also instruct on how to identify plants that will attract butterflies and satisfy the caterpillars.

Calder, a horticulturist and garden designer, managed the Greenhouse for Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and currently teaches garden design classes for the Santa Barbara City College Continuing Education program. A passion for Monarch butterflies led her to write Airplanes in the Garden, a nonfiction children’s picture book to educate and excite children about the wonders of nature.

Parents still have time to register their children for Camp Taiga, for children entering grades 3 – 6. This camp will be held Aug. 6 through 8, 9 am – 12 pm. Campers will learn about animals and plants through hikes, games and other activities. The fee is $60 for Ridges members, $75 for the general public. Pre-registration is required for all Ridges camps.
