Gibraltar Celebrates Spanish Literacy

Artistic Director Wendy Clinard founded the Clinard Dance Theatre in 1999, and on March 17 her passionate love for flamenco will be on display at Gibraltar School as part of the Spanish Literacy Celebration week.

The Friends of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Spanish Department teamed up to celebrate Spanish Literacy at Gibraltar Schools, including a performance by the Clinard Dance Theatre on March 17 at 6:30 pm.

In celebration of the K-12 Spanish curriculum, the week of March 12 – 16 was the second annual celebration week of activities, food, dance, music, and reading that honors Spanish-speaking cultures around the world. There is also an exhibit in the Link Gallery in the Door Community Auditorium on Mexico and Spain.

A contemporary dance company rooted in flamenco, Clinard Dance Theatre of Chicago will perform in the school gymnasium in culmination of the weeklong celebration. The company brings together people from a diverse range of artistic disciplines and cultural backgrounds to create provocative works that explore personal and global concerns, connecting the audience to the world through art.

The performance will feature middle school students. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 for adults and free for children.

The public is welcome to join Gibraltar School families for an authentic Hispanic dinner of tamales at Gibraltar School before the celebration performance on March 17. The dinner will be served in the Gibraltar School cafeteria from 5 – 6:30 pm. Dinner tickets will be limited and proceeds will be used for the annual Spanish Literacy Celebration.
