Gibraltar Handles Oneida 88 – 24

The Gibraltar boys basketball team defeated Oneida Nation 88 – 24 in a non-conference match-up Friday evening in Fish Creek. The Vikings pulled away early, as Kelly Smethurst and Sam Ausloos each poured in seven first quarter points to lead the charge.

The outburst from Smethurst, who finished with a game-high 16, included an emphatic dunk on a first quarter break-away. Ausloos had 13, Sam Forkert added 15, and Tom Sawyer scored 11 (all in the second quarter) to lead Gibraltar.

Eddie Santiago and Dylan Wheelock each scored six to lead Oneida.

The Vikings led 18 – 8 at the end of the first, then used a 31-point second quarter to put the game away early. Ten Gibraltar players scored in the game.

With the win the Vikings improved to 7 – 4 overall (3 – 3 Packerland) and snapped a two-game losing streak in which they were badly beaten by conference foes N.E.W. Lutheran and Oconto. Gibraltar returns to conference play Tuesday at home against Sevastopol, which lost Friday at Stockbridge.
