Gibraltar Historical Association Looks Forward and Back

The Gibraltar Historical Association (GHA) will hold its Annual Meeting at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, September 9 at the Old Town Hall in Fish Creek, across from Clark Park.

This business meeting will be conducted by GHA President, Eunice Rutherford, and all GHA Members, Gibraltar Area Business persons, and prospective members are invited to attend. The meeting will focus on GHA’s 2008 activities and accomplishments and take a look at future memberships, programming, business collaborations, and other history related events for the coming year.

As part of Gibraltar Township’s Sesquicentennial Year reflections about the past, the audience will be given the opportunity to hear radio stories written by deceased GHA Member, Duncan Thorp, and read by Kubet Luchterhand in 1990 via cassette tape.

Back in 1990 Duncan Thorp wrote radio style stories as vignettes of people and events that took place during the early decades in the history of Fish Creek, Wisconsin. These stories offer a glimpse of how life used to be lived in Gibraltar Township that since has changed from a rural outpost to a treasured vacationland. They were selected from stories in the book Fish Creek Voices: An Oral History of a Door County Village edited by the late Edward and Lois Schreiber and published by Wm Caxton Ltd in 1990. This book is still available at Historic Noble House and The Peninsula Bookman in Fish Creek.

A display of vintage radios will set the mood for the evening’s events. These radios are from the collection of John Enigl Sr., Door County historian and long time radio buff.
