Gibraltar Hosted ‘In Tents’ Family Reading Night for Elementary Students

On March 7, Gibraltar Elementary hosted an “In Tents” Family Reading Night. All elementary children in grades K-6 were invited to bring a bag full of books from home to read with parents and family members “in tents” that were set up around the elementary gym. Students were treated to S’more snacks and there was even a roaring campfire in the middle of the gym.

Parent of third grader Mellen and kindergartner Duggan Knapp, Anna Knapp said, “This was a great opportunity for our family to come together, support the goals of the district, to read and have fun!”

Gibraltar Elementary Building Leadership Team members Mike Scoville (librarian), Becky Higginbotham (2nd Grade), Karen Krause (3rd Grade), Devin Thomas (5th Grade), Mary Lamberson (6th Grade) and Bridget Schopf (literacy specialist) planned the event from the start to the finish. The team looked for ways to support the building goal of improving student reading levels and thought a family literacy night would be a great way to start.

Thomas said, “It was great to see students, parents and family members join in the fun tonight and read for enjoyment. Our turnout was fantastic and we are thankful that we have such supportive families at Gibraltar who came to this event.”

The Building Leadership Team members will use feedback from parents and attendees to help plan future family nights.
