Gibraltar Students Honor Community Elders

Gibraltar Elementary School’s grades 4 and 5 students will hold a community celebration honoring four Door County community elders at the Door Community Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 pm. The Elders’ Wisdom, a Children’s SongTM community celebration, presented by the Friends of Gibraltar, will be hosted by Larry Long. The event is free and open to the public.

Recently, Long has been working with students at Gibraltar School to collectively write songs and gather recitations that honor the life stories of community elders Baldomero Jauregui, Eunice Rutherford, Nancy Sargent, and Dale Seaquist.

Larry Long, called “a true American Troubadour” by author Studs Terkel, has made his lifework the celebration of American stories and heroes. In his curriculum, he has brought these heroes to the classroom with the intent of sharing their oral history with a younger generation. A Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, Long has sung at major festivals, concerts, and events throughout the U.S. and worldwide.

Gibraltar Alumni Chris Miller will create DVDs of the program.

The DCA is located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek.
