Gibraltar Takes Home 1st Regional Volleyball Title

Gibraltar volleyball took home the D4 Regional Championship yesterday, upsetting Packerland Conference champion Green Bay NEW Lutheran in four games.

It’s believed that the title is Gibraltar’s 1st ever volleyball regional title.

“I think it’s safe to say a lot of people were surprised,” coach Lauren Bremer said, “but we knew we were capable. We set a goal of getting to sectionals in pre-season, and the girls were really attached to that goal.”

Bremer said all seven seniors stepped up, with Rychia Bosman leading the way with 11 kills and Callie Johnson posting 25 assists. Gibraltar won the first game of the match, but the possibility of an upset on NEW’s home court took a little longer to set in.

“About half way through the second game, I think the girls started to realize, ‘hey, we’re legitimately beating this team,’” Bremer said. “Now we just need to play one more game well and we’re regional champions.”

Next Thursday the Vikings travel to Florence for a sectional semi-final match-up. Florence, like Gibraltar, was the number 2 seed in its regional. They upset Wausaukee for their title. That game will start at 7 pm. Before looking ahead, however, the Vikings soaked in the feeling of champions.

“Tears of joy,” Bremer said of the locker-room scene. “Total ecstasy.”
