Gibraltar Talks Hosts “An Immigrants Journey” with Jody Figgins

The Gibraltar Historical Association of Fish Creek will close the Gibraltar Talk Series with its final history program, “An Immigrant’s Journey,” on Nov. 11 at 7 pm at the Old Gibraltar Town Hall in Fish Creek. Presenter for the evening’s program will be Jody Figgins from Heritage Hill State Park in Green Bay.

Figgins will appear as a costumed interpreter. She will share the struggles and joys of an immigrant’s journey from Germany to America in the mid 19th century. The presentation will be illustrated with replica objects and documents drawn from an immigrant’s trunk.

Of all the nations of Western Europe, Germany played the greatest role in establishing the population of the United States. Over the years the number of Germans crossing the Atlantic in search of new homes, new opportunities, and new freedoms steadily increased, most dramatically in the years between 1820 and 1910, when nearly five and a half million arrived. Many journeyed on to Wisconsin and settled in the northeastern areas to conduct and set up business in the cities and others toiled with much difficulty to build up vast farming empires.

Gibraltar Talk programs are free and refreshments will be served. Free will donations are always appreciated. For more information call 920.868.3618 or 920.493.4279.
