Gibraltar Talks Presents “Meet the Warrens”

The restored Warren House represents pioneer heritage and family life.

The next “Gibraltar Talks” history program will be held on July 12 at 7 pm at the Old Gibraltar Town Hall in Fish Creek. Historians Nan and Jerry Krause will present “Meet the Warrens.”

Brothers William and Albert Warren came to the timbered Door County wilderness from New York in 1855. These early pioneers influenced this county as farmers, land surveyors, store accountants, county board members, and leaders of their townships.

William’s son, Julius, fought in the Civil War, with Twelfth Wisconsin Volunteers; while his uncle and cousins fought for the Confederacy. In his lifetime, Julius wore many hats as soldier, farmer, postmaster, and a lighthouse keeper at Cana Island.

In 1877 Julius and his wife Sarah built a sturdy log house on their farm 5 miles south of Sturgeon Bay in Claybanks Township, and raised six children. The family was active in the Peoples Party and served as leaders in the local Temperance Society.

Early Door County farmers and their families lived an isolated existence, but they could find community by traveling five or six miles by horse or on foot.

The Krause’s will share memories of the Warrens’ life via a skit. Audience members are welcome to ask questions and refreshments will be served.
