Girls Softball: Pioneers Swept by Wolves

Sevastopol’s softball team wasn’t able to play the role of spoiler Tuesday when the Pioneers lost both games of their Packerland Conference doubleheader at Algoma, this season’s league champions.

The Wolves, who ended up in sole possession of the Packerland title at 15-1, would have had to lose both games to the Pioneers to have ended up in a tie for the top spot with Southern Door, which finished 13-3 in the conference.

In game one, Sevastopol was shut out by Algoma, 4-0.

The Pioneers tallied only four hits over seven innings, with one apiece from Naomi Rikkola, Addison Schauske, Libby Ash and Adison Sawyer.

In the field, Sevastopol committed four errors. The losing pitcher, Schauske, allowed an earned run with six hits and a walk, while striking out six.

The Pioneers lost the second game to the Wolves, 9-6.

Sevastopol tallied 12 hits, including three from Rikkola, who had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. Jolene Luedtke doubled with two hits, while Sawyer and Lyvia Duessler added two singles apiece.

Ash recorded the pitching loss working five innings, allowing two earned runs. In the field, Sevastopol committed six errors.

The Pioneers, who wrapped up the regular season 9-7 in the Packerland, open the WIAA Division 5 tournament May 21 at 5 pm when the No. 3-seeded Pioneers host their regional semifinal against No. 6-seeded NEW Lutheran.
