GPS Instructional Seminar Offered

The Door County Sail & Power Squadron is offering a free two-hour seminar for Using GPS. The seminar will be held from 6:30 – 8:30 pm on Monday, May 11, at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Room 147 (use the north entrance), 229 North 14th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.

During the seminar, students will learn how to create routes on a GPS or on a computer for downloading to a GPS using the free Maptech plotting software with the free NOAA raster charts. Participants should bring their GPS’s and/or laptops. Student notes and educational materials are available for purchase if desired.

This program along with others offered by the Door County Sail & Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons®, District 10, are qualifying seminars in the USPS University Certification program. The Squadron Education Department offers other seminars for the general public throughout the spring and summer. Four additional free seminars are scheduled:  Marine Radar in June, Anchoring in July, Global Marine Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in August, and Nautical Knots in September.

Another civic service the squadron offers is free Vessel Safety Checks, which are offered for any recreational boaters in the community. This year, locations include West Marine on May 30, Quarterdeck and Harbor Club Marinas on June 6, and June 20 in Fish Creek, with another possible location to be determined.
