Grand Opening at the Skatepark

The Sturgeon Bay Skatepark opened last fall, but is now making its presence official. On June 13, the Sturgeon Bay Skatepark will celebrate a Grand Opening from 11 am – 1 pm, with live music by Found the Lost at 11:30 am and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12 pm. All are invited to attend. Skating demonstrations will take place and door prizes will be given away throughout the event.

“We’re very much looking forward to this community celebration,” stated skatepark initiative co-chairs Laurel Hauser and Matt Dixner Young. “It’s a time for us to thank all the individuals, families, businesses and organizations that made this happen. We encourage everyone to stop by, join the fun and see what the excitement is all about.”

The Sturgeon Bay Skatepark Initiative (SBSI) partnered with the City of Sturgeon Bay and the Door County Community Foundation to raise more than $400,000 between the end of 2011 and the summer of 2014. According to Dixner Young, “All the people involved, including many kids, worked hard to build the best park possible and we are so grateful the community supported our vision.”

The Sturgeon Bay Skatepark has received high marks from skaters who have come from all over the Midwest and as far away as California. The Skatepark’s Facebook site received the following praise from one skater: “I drove up to Sturgeon Bay from Milwaukee to skate the park with my friends. Everything about it is perfect! The locals were very friendly and welcoming…It could not have been better. The park is in a beautiful location. I will be back as much as I can.”

Local restaurants will be on site during the Grand Opening offering food and beverages for purchase. Sturgeon Bay’s mayor, Thad Birmingham, will be on hand to help with the ribbon cutting ceremony. Music at the skatepark is offered in partnership with the Steel Bridge Songfest. Following the Grand Opening, all are encouraged to stop by the Holiday Music Motel, with music starting at 1 pm.

The Sturgeon Bay Skatepark is located at 16 W. Spruce Street. The skatepark is open every day from dawn to dusk at no charge to skateboarders and BMX bikers. For more information visit sbskate.org.
