Grant Would Improve Internet Options in Liberty Grove

Internet service in northern Door County could get a lot better this year.

The Town of Liberty Grove, in cooperation with Door County Broadband, hopes to build three new towers to provide wireless broadband coverage to more than 90 percent of the sprawling township.

Town Chairman John Lowry said the town is partnering with Door County Broadband in a grant application through Wisconsin Public Service that would help pay for the towers. The town already has two towers, one on Mink River Road and one on Timberline Road.

The application will be supported by responses from a survey sent to residents last month requesting input on whether improved internet service would be important to them.

Lowry said improved internet coverage serves several town goals.

“If we can get second and third homeowners to stay another day, that will put more money back in the community,” Lowry said. “We’d also like to attract people who would work from home. It could help us draw younger families and keep people in the town.”
