Gratitude for a Helping Hand

Recently, my wife – a Wisconsin native – and I spent six days in Door County. We engaged in a variety of activities and had a wonderful time.

We were leaving Oct. 7 and were driving from Egg Harbor to the Green Bay airport when one of the tires on our rental car disintegrated. Luckily, we were near the Red Rocket Shell station and managed to park there. The rental car had no spare tire, so we initially resigned ourselves to missing our return flight to Atlanta.

While there, we were approached by Jason and Laura Estes, the owners of Sonny’s Pizzeria in Sturgeon Bay. Without our asking, they offered to help and wound up loading our luggage into their car and giving us a ride to the airport. They went out of their way to do so. Not only did they save our day, but they proved to be friendly, gregarious, delightful people. It was an absolute pleasure getting to know them briefly.

When we got to the rental-car location at the airport, we expressed our amazement about how helpful Jason and Laura had been, and the attendant noted that it was simply a matter of folks being “Wisconsin nice.” To us, there was nothing simple about it at all. Instead, two people went out of their way to be both gracious and generous and to save our day. If everyone were as thoughtful and kind as these wonderful people, the world would be a better place.

Many, many thanks to Jason and Laura and to everyone else in Door County for their hospitality.
