HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay are among the Wisconsin hospitals to receive remdesivir, an antiviral drug for the treatment of COVID-19.
On May 1, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved remdesivir for emergency use in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 who are relying on oxygen therapy or more intensive breathing support such as a mechanical ventilator. The antiviral drug is administered intravenously.
A clinical trial sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases indicated patients who received remdesivir recovered from COVID-19 more quickly than those who received a placebo.
