Green is a Favorite Color at Door County Interiors & Design

Step into Door County Interiors & Design, and the showroom presents furniture, accessories and interior design samples of many colors and textures. There are natural stones and woods for countertops and flooring.

But one hue—green—colors the philosophy at the Egg Harbor retailer and home interiors resource. Here, a commitment to lessening impact on the environment shows backstage, where the team of 13 employees reduces their paper usage. It’s also on stage in high-profile areas like the retail showroom, where eco-friendly furniture is displayed.

“We are stressing here to be a green company, to sell green products and work with green manufacturers,” said co-owner Ron Trimberger. “We feel as a business that we have an obligation to the beautiful county we live. We are charged with it on this Earth, and we are interested in our present customers’ and future customers’ lives.”

That commitment begins with efforts the customer barely notices.

Trimberger has asked companies sending goods to the store to protect items with cardboard or shredded paper and to refrain from using Styrofoam and plastic. One company puts pieces in blankets that they reuse. He recently invested $10,000 to change lighting from incandescent to much more efficient compact florescent bulbs.

Building temperature is controlled by a programmable thermostat, adjusted by zone. When meetings are not being held with customers, the conference space is not heated in the winter or cooled in the summer.

In the showroom, the greening continues.

Door County Interiors & Design showcases work by Peninsula-based artists, who create with indigenous materials or in eco-friendly ways. Many of the company’s products are made from recyclable materials or in sustainable ways.

One of the best-selling flooring options in the store are Amish-made handscraped hardwood floors. Bamboo, a fast-growing grass in China and other areas, is also a customer flooring favorite.

Recycled glass, concrete and stone are among the countertop and backsplash finishes displayed and available to customers.

”Our main function here it to help people. We do that by showing them different products,” said co-owner Carol Trimberger. “We are here to offer advice and our thorough knowledge of the products we work with.”

Design consultant Cynthia DeLaMer leads seminars on energy efficient window coverings. They may insulate a room during the winter and help keep it cool during the summer.
