Groundbreaking Set for Habitat’s 38th Door County Home

Habitat for Humanity will have a ceremonial groundbreaking celebration on Wednesday, June 10, at 5 pm at 822 E. Galley Place, Sturgeon Bay.  The family, community leaders, Habitat staff and volunteers are invited to kick off Door County Habitat for Humanity’s 38th home build. The ceremony will include an introduction of the partner family, words of encouragement from Habitat officials and the traditional blessing of the project.

The plan is to finish the project by early November so that one more family will be able to enjoy Christmas in their new Habitat home. This is the first Habitat for Humanity home built under the leadership of David Van Dyke who joined Door County Habitat for Humanity in October of 2014.

The home will employ a three-bedroom design, again donated by Sturgeon Bay architect, Henry Isaksen. The family, which is already well on its way to completing the required 200 hours of sweat equity, is excited to move just once more – for the last time into their own permanent residence.

Excavation has been finished, permits have been pulled and soon the focus of Habitat’s work crews will shift to framing the home.

Door County Habitat for Humanity has helped 37 families with new homes in the past 22 years and have assisted 25 families with painting and/or critical repair projects.

Additionally, in 2014, 30 Door County Habitat partner families paid $56,422.62 in property taxes to local Door County municipalities and more than $11,400 in insurance premiums to local agents. The total assessed property value of the 37 Habitat homes built on the Door Peninsula since 1994 now exceeds $4,000,000. Habitat’s partner families contribute to the community with their labor, their taxes and their support of the local economy.
