Guest Artist Returns to Chief Oshkosh

Learn more about the Earth’s four orders when Dick Mindykowski returns to Chief Oshkosh Native American Arts in Egg Harbor Aug. 17 & 18. Mindykowski will share the meaning of each of his handcrafted creations, which will also be exhibited during each day from 10 am to 4 pm at Chief Oshkosh Native American Arts. The guest artist is offering a gift to the first 20 children to arrive each day.

A Lac Courte Oreilles member, artist and storyteller, Mindykowski features his artwork (walking sticks, dancing staffs, turtle rattles, shields, dreamcatchers, etc.) that highlight the Earth’s four orders: physical, plant, animal and human. In his works, he includes aspen, paper birch, speckled elder or cedar. After the wood is seasoned for one or two years, the bark and outer wood are scraped off, and the wood is cut to the proper length for each project. Using a belt grinder, he burns designs into the wood. Then, he adorns individual pieces with various combinations of stones, fur, deer antlers, leather, feathers and/or beads.

Mindykowski’s works are sold at powwows and stores throughout Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Meet the artist and storyteller on these two August days when he is the guest artist at Chief Oshkosh.

Chief Oshkosh Native American Arts is located at 7631 Highway 42 in Egg Harbor. For more information, call 920.868.3240 or email [email protected].
