Guest Rev. at Atonement

On Aug. 31, The Rev. Matthew Alan Gunter will be at Fish Creek’s Church of the Atonement at 8 and 10 am, preaching for the first time in Door County as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac.

Bishop Gunter, rector since 2000 of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn, Ill., was elected bishop last fall. He grew up on a farm in northern Indiana, received a B.A. in history from Indiana University and taught and worked in education for a decade. Then he attended Virginia Theological Seminary. After ordination to the priesthood he served St. David’s Episcopal Church, Glenview. During almost two decades of ministry, Bishop Gunter has served in capacities including spiritual adviser of Cursillo and Happening, Commission on Global Ministry (Diocese of Chicago), dean of the Aurora Deanery, deputy to three General Conventions, chaplain at the 75th General Convention, diocesan delegation to Renk, Sudan, and the San Joaquin County AIDS Foundation.
