Guided Hike of Little Lake Nature Preserve

On July 21, the Door County Land Trust invites the public to a guided hike of its northernmost nature preserve, the Little Lake Nature Preserve on Washington Island.

Little Lake, the island’s only inland lake, was created thousands of years ago when waves washed gravel and cobblestones across a shallow bay of glacial Lake Nippising (now Lake Michigan.) As the glacial waters receded, a narrow ridge was formed to create Little Lake. The narrow ridge provides a stunning view of Lake Michigan to the west and Little Lake to the east.

Little Lake is surrounded by stands of white cedar, hemlock and a floating bog mat and provides habitat for nesting and foraging waterfowl and songbirds including bald eagles, white pelicans, osprey, herons and black-throated blue warblers.

The hike departs at 1 pm from the trailhead located at 2300 Main Road. The hike is easy-to-moderate on even-to-rocky terrain. Hikes will be held rain or shine, and remember to wear sturdy footwear and bring a water bottle.

Also, the 10th Annual Washington Island Folk Festival takes place on July 20 and 21 with proceeds benefiting the Door County Land Trust.
