Hammered Dulcimer Takes Center Stage at Joe Jo’s

Hammered dulcimer master Phil Passen will be featured as part of the winter music series at Joe Jo‘s Pizza and Gelato in Ephraim on Friday, December 18, from 7 – 9 pm.

Recognized as one of the finest hammered dulcimer players in the Midwest, Passen plays and sings traditional old-time American and Celtic music (the soulful roots of Bluegrass and country). Passen is one of the few musicians who sing while accompanying themselves on the hammered dulcimer – an instrument whose name means “beautiful song.” With rhythmic playing on fast tunes and sensitive playing on slow numbers, the artist’s musicianship ranges from soothing to happy and bouncy.

Passen’s newest CD, with guitarist Tom Conway, is Cold Frosty Morning: Christmas and Winter Holiday Music. The CD features beautiful melodies such as “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” and “What Child Is This” along with old favorites such as “My Dreidl” and “Jingle Bell Rock.”

Swinging on a Gate: Traditional American and Celtic Music, Phil’s first CD, was a “most popular” choice on and is now in its second pressing. The old-time American and Celtic dance and fiddle tunes include “Twin Sisters,” “Bonaparte’s Retreat,” “Miss MacLeod’s Reel,” and “John Ryan’s Polka”

At Joe Jo’s, Passen will include lots of familiar and not-so-familiar Christmas and winter holiday music with his regular repertoire of traditional American and Irish music.
