Hans Christian Hosts Additional Gong Concert

Sturgeon Bay artist Hans Christian is offering a fifth gong concert as a benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Door County. All previously scheduled gong concerts are sold out and a steady stream of requests has led to the addition of this concert on Dec. 6 at 7 pm. The event is open to the public and all donations will go to the B&G Club.

Titled “Sonic Immersion,” these one hour long concerts will be performed live without electronics or amplification at his recording studio, STUDIO 330. Christian calls this type of performance “source music,” or as he puts it, “music that emerges from randomness into structure.”

“The current gong concert series has been embraced enthusiastically by its audiences,” said Christian. “But some people can’t make it on Saturdays, and some people can’t afford the $25 admission, so I decided to offer a free, donation-based concert to benefit the important work of the Boys & Girls Club.”

The main gong used for this concert is a 40-inch Atlantis gong that weighs more than 50 pounds and has an incredible dynamic range. Augmenting the gong is a smaller 22-inch Atlantis gong, a 28-inch Chinese wind gong, and two Tibetan bowls. By using different types of mallets to strike, rub and mute the gongs, a wide variety of tonal expressions can be generated.

“A gong concert is a complete immersion into sound,” says Christian. “The listener should be in a very comfortable position, either lying down or leaning back, to absorb the vibrations of the performance. This is a deep listening experience of the highest order.”

No reservations are necessary. Concertgoers should arrive at 6 pm, wear comfortable clothing and bring favorite pillows, blankets or yoga mats.

STUDIO 330 is located at 330 N. Third Ave. in Sturgeon Bay. For more information visit hanschristianmusic.com.
