Healing Arts

“Messengers Flight of the Soul” by Bren Sibilsky.

Bren Sibilsky, an Algoma sculptor, received two awards in the recent Manhattan Arts International show The Healing Power of ART. The show’s purpose is to promote the scientifically proven fact that art heals by transforming one’s physiological state and perception. According to the curator, Renee Phillips, “Historically, Manhattan Arts International has attracted the most talented artists from around the world. This year the level of artwork surpassed previous competitions.”

The first of Bren’s winning works is titled “Fishers of Men” and received a First Place Award. The sculpture is in clay and will be cast into bronze.

The second of Bren’s winning works is titled “Messengers Flight of the Soul” which received an Artist Showcase Award. Bren said about this piece, “This drawing has a lot to do with me accepting death and the struggle of life. The bird in the drawing was a baby when I rescued it. I released it as an adult. She had many babies that year, but was eventually killed by a hawk. That is the circle of life around the spirit bird in the background, which is flying into the box shapes which I created from the frame on the wall behind my father. Contained in that frame is a photo of my older brother who tragically died many years before. He died the same year I left for Art School. I looked at that photo many times when dad sat there. I knew he would see his only son soon. My father and I spent many months together his last year of life as he fought cancer. This drawing was created during this time and was finished after his death.”

Sibilsky’s studio/gallery, located at E5977 Fremont Rd in Algoma, is open 10 am – 5 pm Friday thru Monday, May through November. For more information visit brensculpture.com.
