HELP of Door County Partners with Women’s Independence Scholarship Program

HELP of Door County is partnering with Women’s Independence Scholarship Program (WISP) scholarships for victims of domestic abuse. HELP Executive Director Steve Vickman said, “HELP of Door County is pleased to be able to partner with WISP to provide scholarship assistance to women who have left an abusive domestic situation and who are pursuing an education designed to provide economic independence for themselves and their children.”

The purpose of WISP is to enhance efforts to stop the cycle of domestic violence by offering financial empowerment through access to higher education. Scholarship Awards are for tuition, books and fees and paid directly to the educational institution. Charitable Adjunct Assistance Awards are for education-related living expenses that would otherwise be financial barriers to education, and are paid to the sponsoring agency on behalf of the recipient.

All recipients are required to have a “sponsor” who acts as an advocate and case manager who has worked with the survivor of intimate partner abuse for at least six consecutive months.

Support is available for full- or part-time students interested in attending accredited programs at state supported community colleges; state supported colleges or universities; technical/vocational schools; private colleges or universities; and for profit colleges.
