HELP of Door County Receives $10,000, Director Recognized

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: a time when the nation recognizes survivors of domestic violence and their struggles to live liberated, safe, violence-free lives.

HELP of Door County has served thousands of victims and their children in this effort since it began in 1979. Executive Director Milly Gonzales was surprised to learn that she was to be recognized with a Nation of Neighbors Award during the Oct. 5 Walk with Me event hosted by HELP of Door County.

Nation of Neighbors recipients are influential leaders who exemplify a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” mission of community service. In addition to the recognition for Gonzales, HELP will receive a $10,000 award from Nation of Neighbors to further its work to help prevent and end violence.

Don Heeringa, a former Zion pastor and retiring HELP of Door County board member, was also honored during the Oct. 5 event with an Anne Kok Social Justice Award, which was established in 2008 to honor Kok’s work to prevent and eliminate domestic violence and to promote social justice.
