Hendersons and Lewis Featured at DCAL Gallery

Glass “quilt” to be raffled off to benefit the Door County Art League.

For the week of Aug. 2, watercolorist Sam Lewis and glass artists Doug and Barbara Henderson will be featured at the Gallery of the Door County Art League, located in the Top of the Hill Shops in Fish Creek.

Sam Lewis has been painting off and on for 40 years. During 14 of those years, he owned and operated an art gallery and framing business in Milwaukee and did not paint much because of business demands.

Lewis generally paints plein air or from photographs. He is well-known in Door County and beyond for his sailing images. Lewis says he likes painting watercolors “because it is a constant challenge and there are so many ways watercolor can be handled.”

In addition to the Gallery, Lewis’s watercolors can be found at Paint Box Gallery, the Bridge in Egg Harbor, and Stone Harbor in Sturgeon Bay.

Before her involvement with fused glass, Barbara Henderson spent more than 40 years working in the fiber arts. She gets her inspiration from the things around her, which is reflected in the textural and organic nature of her work.

Doug Henderson, an educator and museum director, is not a formally trained artist. In fact, he first began experimenting with photography, where his images captured the architectural details of both buildings and landscapes. As a glass artist, Doug incorporates those same structural elements and details into his work.

The Hendersons were the driving force behind the two glass “quilts,” a fundraiser for the Door County Art League. The first one was raffled at the opening reception of the Juried Exhibit, and the second “quilt” will be raffled at the gallery during an open house on Saturday, September 26, 3 – 5 pm. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. To purchase tickets, visit the Gallery, where the “quilt” is on display, or contact Gale Ritchey at 920.839.1175.

The Gallery of the Door County Art League is located in the Top of the Hill Shops, Highway 42 and County F on Spring Road in Fish Creek. Business hours are 10 am – 5 pm daily, and a reception is planned for the fourth Saturday of each month, 3 – 5 pm. For more information visit or call 920.559.7530 or 920.868.2288.
