Highway Will Reopen in Fish Creek by Friday

The reconstruction of Highway 42 past Gibraltar School is nearing completion.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that the highway will open to traffic by Friday, June 19. Though lanes were paved and painted by June 5, workers have been busy installing required highway signage and roadside landscaping this week.

The $5.6 million project has affected traffic on and off since last year and has required significant detours since March, stifling business in Fish Creek.

Project planning stretches back more than a decade. This final project creates, for the first time, new pedestrian connections among the Northern Door YMCA, Gibraltar School, several hotels and businesses, and the Fish Creek core. Sidewalks now escort walkers up the hill on the north end of the village, and pedestrian islands provide safe crossings for students going between the YMCA and Gibraltar School, and for attendees making their way between the Door Community Auditorium and businesses across the street.
