Hikers Invited to Explore Appel’s Bluff, The Ridges’ Latest Acquisition

Looking for areas to see and photograph the natural beauty found in early fall? Grab your camera or camera phone, and let a Ridges naturalist lead you to some of the best spots at the Sanctuary. This relaxed Photo Ops Hike takes place on Sept. 23 at 1:30 pm. Hiking fees are $5/adult for Ridges members and $8/adult for the general public.

Join a naturalist on Sept. 24 at 10 am to explore Appel’s Bluff, the newest addition to The Ridges’ campus. This recently acquired property forms the northern boundary of The Ridges and features ledges, a hardwood forest, open fields and many opportunities to see birds and blooms in a variety of habitats. Fees for the Upland Hike are $5 for Ridges members and $8 for the general public. Children under 18 hike free.

ridges fall mushroom huntingEach year mushroom enthusiasts descend upon their favorite mushroom foraging spots in hopes of finding treasure. Join Shannon Pump, naturalist and owner of the Wild Door, for Fall Mushroom Hunting on Sept. 25 at 1 pm. Learn the basics about mushrooms, which are safe to eat, where they grow and how to distinguish the look-alikes. Finish with a hike to one of the seasonal hot spots. Fees are $30 for Ridges members and $40 for the general public and include a field guide and mesh spore bag. Advance registration required.
