History Hikes Commemorate The Ridges 75th Anniversary

2012 marks the 75th anniversary of The Ridges Sanctuary. For the anniversary, on July 20 at 9 am, Roy Lukes will recreate the very first hike he led at The Ridges in 1964 as part of a special series of History Hikes.

On July 21 at 9 am, Paul Regnier and Carl Scholz will conduct a hike on The Ridges Logan Creek property. Regnier served as Ridges director and chief naturalist from 1990 – 2005 and Scholz was a former Ridges board president.

On August 2 at 10 am, current Director Steve Leonard will walk the new boardwalk route, sharing the property’s history and the vision for the new interpretive center.

History Hikes are $8 for Ridges members and $10 for the general public.

The Ridges also continues its series of Discovery Bird Walks on July 14, 21, and 28 from 6:30 – 8:30 am. Bird enthusiasts who like to sleep in may prefer the Not So Early Bird Hike at 9 am on July 14. Bird Walks are free to Ridges members, $5 for the general public.

Family programs offered in July include a special presentation by Wildlife of Wisconsin (W.O.W) on July 14 at the Marshall Cabin at 10 am and 1 pm. The program features a number of live birds, including hawks, owls and falcons.

On July 16 from 2 – 3:30 pm, families can take part in The Ridges FunDay Monday Nature Art Activity.

On July 18 at 10 am, David Stokes will use live creatures, animal artifacts and puppets as part of Night Animals, held at the McArdle Library in Baileys Harbor. Admission is free.

Also on July 18 from 8 – 9:30 pm, families can gather at The Ridges Sanctuary for Creatures of the Night where they can toast marshmallows and take a short hike to find night creatures.

Family programs are $15 per family for Ridges members, $20 per family for the general public.

Registration is still open for two sessions of Explorers, a day camp for grades 3 – 6, and for Camp Taiga.
