Honey Harvest And Sweet Activities

Curious about the world of honeybees and beekeeping? Attend the Door County Beekeepers Club’s 2023 Community Honey Harvest, which will take place rain or shine Aug. 19, 9-11 am, at Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan St. in Sturgeon Bay.

With support from Crossroads, the Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association, Wild Ones and the Seed Library, club members will share the fascinating world of honeybees through hands-on, interactive activities and demonstrations for all ages.

Pick up free pollinator seeds and Lotto game cards at the welcome table; then visit all the stations marked on the Lotto card to receive a special surprise. Get a close-up view of honeybees tending their brood through the glass window of an observation hive. Taste and compare honey, pollen and wax comb; try honey lemonade and mead; make beeswax wraps; and roll wax candles. In the children’s tent, kids can pet a live drone (male) honeybee and explore beekeepers’ tools and hive boxes, among other activities.

Honey-extraction demonstrations will take place 9:30-10 am and 10:30-11 am. Protective bee suits and veils will be provided, and participants will receive a small honey-bear sample while supplies last. New this year is the honeybee raffle, including local honey and other items.

All proceeds go to the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association’s Youth Scholarship Program. Find out more by emailing [email protected].
