Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay is exploring the possibility of becoming certified as a WISE (Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive and Engaged) congregation: a faith community that strives to welcome people whose lives have been affected by mental illness or brain disorders.
WISE is a mental health ministry initiative developed by a United Church of Christ pastor in Boulder, Colorado, whose brother died by suicide and who has an adult son with bipolar disorder.
The WISE education process seeks to increase understanding of mental illness, promote mental wellness and emulate the inclusive teachings of Jesus in relationships with those who face mental-health challenges.
The church is offering forums on a variety of related topics. The next program will be held Dec. 11, 9 am, in the Fellowship Hall of the church, 141 S. 12th Ave. in Sturgeon Bay. The presenter will be Lauren Daoust, a therapist and the director of the new Senior Life Solutions program at Door County Medical Center, which focuses on older adults’ mental health. All are welcome.
