Humane Society Year-End Report

In 2014, the Door County Humane Society (DCHS) took in more than 700 animals while finding new homes for 55 dogs and 460 cats. “Our mission to care for homeless animals while striving to find new homes for adoptable cats and dogs was fulfilled in the most positive way last year. DCHS received animals from all 19 municipalities in the county. One of the best numbers is the reclaimed line at 115 animals. That breaks down as 94 dogs and 21 cats brought in as strays but reunited with their worried owners,” said Executive Director Carrie Counihan. Only the City of Sturgeon Bay has a contract with DCHS to care for stray animals. Other towns and villages are asked at budget planning time for donations to cover a small portion of animal care, valued at $15/day while at the shelter.
