Humbug Road Clarification

Welcome to the Notes from the Grove, providing Liberty Grove residents and visitors with tid bits of information about goings on in Town Government.

• The following is the timeline for voting in the November General Election: Sept. 20 – absentee ballots must be in the mail if previously requested; Oct. 17 – last day for electors to mail in requests to register to vote;
Oct. 22 – first day for clerks to issue absentee ballots for electors voting in person in the clerk’s office
; Nov.1 – last day to request an absentee ballot by mail;
Nov. 2 – last day to register to vote in the clerk’s office before the election and the last day for in-person voting in clerk’s office;
Nov. 6— general election. Polls will be open 7 am – 8 pm.

• The Highway Committee received a schedule of roadwork for 2013 – 2016. The committee felt the schedule looked good. The committee is developing a five-year rolling plan for roadwork. It is a flexible schedule and could change to meet situations where a road might need attention earlier in the schedule. The projected cost for 2013 comes to about $500,000. Roads are the largest single item in the town’s budget.

• The Highway Committee has proposed an immediate 35 mph advisory speed limit on Isle View Road and an advisory 35 mph speed limit on Garrett Bay Road at the intersection of Maplewood Lane south to Ellison Bay. No parking was also proposed on the west side of Highway 42 from 25 feet north of the Woodland Condominium driveway to Garrett Bay Road. All actions have been passed to the Town Board for their approval. The committee will finish its budget work at their next meeting.

• The town received a check for $400 from Norsec Computers Recycling LLC, Green Bay, in appreciation for the recycling events held by the town. Norsec has been the company that processed the appliance/electronic recycling materials collected during the town’s collection days. The check will be turned over to the Sister Bay Liberty Grove Fire Department. The fall Appliance Computer Recycling and Shred Fest is scheduled for October 20.

• Following some questions/discussion regarding Humbug Road, I received the following explanation from Administrator Kalms: “For some reason Humbug got changed to High Road but had always been referred to as Humbug by all local residents who were familiar with the road. So, Humbug was High Road for a time, was originally Humbug, and is now Humbug again. Note that the private drive/road that branches off to the northeast from the Humbug curve is called High Road Lane. Apparently the road naming people were not aware of the Humbug designation, or did not like the name Humbug.”
