Hwy. 42 and 57 Seal-Coating Begins July 19

On Tuesday, July 19, the Door County Highway Department will begin roadway construction on two seal-coating projects for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The scheduled work includes Hwy. 42 from Rainbow Ridge Court in Egg Harbor to Gibraltar Bluff Road, and Hwy. 57 from the Mid Junction to County P. The seal coating process consists of applying a liquid asphalt spray on the roadway followed immediately by a coat of small aggregate. When applied to a bituminous pavement surface, a seal coat provides a durable all-weather surfacing that extends the life of the bituminous roadway surface. The Highway Department will use a moving road closure for the application of the seal coat. This process involves complete closure of short segments of the highway by allowing traffic to use side roads as a bypass and allows the construction process to keep moving. Therefore, short segments of the state highway will be closed to all traffic for a short period of time. After the construction crews have moved through a segment of roadway, the highway will be immediately opened to traffic. Additional work, including sweeping of excess aggregate off the roadway will continue under traffic. The sweeping process will begin about four hours after the seal coat has been applied. The reinstallation of pavement marking will take place on Thursday, July 21. Motorists are advised of loose gravel conditions and to use caution when traveling any of these roadways. Motorists are urged to use caution in the construction area and to obey all signage. Questions regarding this work can be answered by contacting the Door County Highway Department at 920.746.2500.
