In Sept. 2011, as Nathan Nichols was celebrating the 10th anniversary of Nathan Nichols & Company, a high-end furniture, home accessories and interior design store in Baileys Harbor, his store was recognized as one of America’s “50 Retail Stars” by Home Accents Today magazine.

“People come to Door County looking for good, quality things,” Nichols said at that time. “I have a unique thing here, and I hope we can keep Baileys Harbor moving towards high end business and restaurants.”

He turned the 1879 building that had housed a drug store, veterinary office, bakery and barbershop into a showpiece in downtown Baileys Harbor for his bright and airy showroom.

Nichols was so tied into the idea of bettering Baileys Harbor that he ensured that Nathan Nichols & Company would continue in his absence.

Nichols, a native of Keene, New Hampshire, 67, died on June 13, 2015. He is survived by son Cory (Valerie) Nichols of Ellsworth, ME; father George Nichols, Marlboro, NH; brother Wendel (Penny) Nichols of Gilsum, NH; granddaughter Tiffany Nichols of Ellsworth, ME; grandsons Logan Nichols, Springfield, VT and Mason Nichols of Spartanburg, SC; nephew Josh (Tracy) Nichols, Savannah, GA; many aunts, uncles and friends. Nichols was preceded in death by mother Joan, wife Gretchen and son Tyson. Private family services will take place in New Hampshire at a later date.
