The Friends of Lorine Niedecker and Write On, Door County have named Lauren Carlson as the first recipient of the Lorine Niedecker Fellowship. Katherine Yets of St. Francis, Wisconsin, and Kasey Jueds of Shokan, New York, were honorable mentions.

Carlson is a poet and spiritual director who lives in Manistee, Michigan, and she’s the editor of Tinderbox Poetry Journal. In 2022, she won the Levis Stipend from Friends of Writers for her manuscript in progress.

Carlson’s chapbook, Animals I Have Killed, earned Comstock Review’s Chapbook Prize in 2018, and her poetry has appeared in Crab Creek Review, Salamander Magazine, Terrain, The Windhover and Waxwing, among many other publications. She holds an MFA in poetry from the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers.

Carlson will spend April 30 – May 7 at Write On and May 7-14 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin – the late Niedecker’s home area. She will present public programs in both locations.
