After a successful May tour in Belgium with their Centennial Commissions Concert Series, the Pro Arte Quartet will perform on Sept. 12 at Woodwalk Gallery. They will delight the audience with an international trio of pieces by Juan Crisَstomo Arriaga, Antonيn Dvořلk and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Midsummer’s Music is proud to present the Pro Arte Quartet, which was founded in 1911-12 by teenage prodigies who were students at the Brussels Conservatory. Stranded in the USA in 1940 by the outbreak of World War II, the Quartet became established at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where it became the first professional string quartet in residence at an American university, a model now widely emulated. In all, the quartet has commissioned and/or presented first performances of more than 100 new works, by major composers of its day.

Two of the current members of the quartet are also regular members of Midsummer’s Music, violinist David Perry and violist Sally Chisholm. They are joined by violinist Suzanna Beia and cellist Parry Karp. All hold positions at UW-Madison.

The concert begins at 7:30 pm and a reception will follow the concert allowing for patrons to visit with the musicians and other concertgoers. Woodwalk Gallery is located at 6746 County Road G in Egg Harbor. Tickets are priced at $30 for adults and $10 for students. Reservations are recommended, as the Pro Arte concert is a popular event.
